Poetry Drawer: The Whelk (after Hurricane Isabel) by Dale Walker

So what
are you now?
Not
what you were:

tumbled,
re-shaped by waves
and sand,
diminished.

cast by storm’s surge
beyond
highest tide.

Only your inmost spiral remains–
a core of strength
resisting.

Dale Walker is a poet from North Carolina.
